Tom Brady has made quite a career out of interpreting the motivations and intentions of others, on the football field. However, when it comes to those trying to read into the six-time Super Bowl champion’s intentions in selling his Boston mansion, Brady says they’re wasting their time.
During an interview with Boston’s WEEI on Monday, the Patriots quarterback who recently put his $39.5 million mansion up for sale, said that people shouldn’t use that to speculate about his future in New England.
“You shouldn’t read into anything,” Brady said. “I think it takes a long time to sell a house. My house is a little bit of an expensive one, so it doesn’t quite fly off the shelf in a couple of weeks.”
The recent contract Brady signed with New England makes him an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2020 season. That, coupled with news that his Boston mansion was hitting the open market, fueled no small amount of speculation that the future Hall of Famer might be preparing to end his football career.
“Tom and Gisele are quietly looking at homes in Connecticut. The plan is that he would divide his time between New York and LA in his post-NFL career, likely starting a number of businesses based in health, sports, apparel and broadcasting,” a source told Page 6.
In addition, Brady also recently hired the high-profile WME talent agency to handle his non-football projects.
However, as Brady tells it, the mansion sale has more to do with where he is in life right now, as opposed to signaling retirement.
“I think I’m at a point in my life where there’s a lot of considerations that go into playing. I have a busy professional life, I have a very busy personal life. Any decision that’s made has to consider everything,” Brady said. “I’m certainly at a place — where I’ve been in the same place for a long time — and I love playing for the Patriots.
“I have such a great relationship with Mr. Kraft, coach Belichick and our team. We’ll just worry about that when that happens. This isn’t the time to worry about it.”
While this may not be the exact time to worry about Brady’s retirement, his recent moves certainly suggest that the quarterback is thinking seriously about life beyond football.
