Six players were ejected during Saturday’s WNBA game in Phoenix, as Brittney Griner and Kristine Anigwe faced off starting a short brawl on the court.
The fight occurred during the fourth quarter at Talking Stick Resort Arena in the game between the Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings in a contest that, according to USA Today, seemed contentious from the start.
Something set off Mercury center Brittney Griner who took out after newly acquired Dallas rookie Kristine Anigwe. The pair briefly locked arms ahead of the confrontation and Griner may have taken a smack to the face as Anigwe pulled away.
The pop to the chops spurred Griner to deliver a windmill of blows Anigwe’s way, sending Anigwe’ running, and causing several other players to jump into the mix.
Anigwe (Dallas), Griner (Mercury), and Kayla Thornton (Dallas) were all ejected for the fight itself. But three more players, Diana Taurasi (Mercury), Briann January (Mercury), and Kaela Davis (Dallas), were also ejected for coming off the bench.
Even though it was Griner bobblehead night, the Wings finished the game 80-77.
