Conor McGregor outraged many for mocking fellow UFC Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Muslim marriage ceremony, calling the fighter’s wife a “towel.”
McGregor tweeted out photos of Khabib sitting next to his new wife during their wedding, where the woman was seen wearing a full body covering. McGregor mocked the woman’s Muslim garb telling Khabib “Your wife is a towel, mate,” TMZ Sports reported.
The tweet came as part of a round of tweets between McGregor and boxing analyst Paulie Malignaggi and Nurmagomedov. At one point, McGregor taunted Nurmagomedov saying, “Don’t be scared of the rematch you little scurrying rat.”
McGregor and Malignaggi have been at odds since a 2017 sparring session went awry and ended with Malignaggi claiming McGregor fought dirty and that McGregor never knocked him down (despite video evidence to the contrary).
The outrageous boxer was also targeting the undefeated Nurmagomedov, and at one point, McGregor went after the Russian’s wife.
Nurmagomedov’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, excoriated McGregor for the attack on his client’s wedding ceremony.
“Talking sh*t, this guy is insulting someone’s wife and making fun of her religion and belief. He doesn’t realize he’s insulting 1.5 billon Muslims,” Abdelaziz tweeted. “Religion and family is a no no. You’re fucked Connor, let’s see what the media is going to say now. He’s a rapist, and a bitch.”
McGregor apparently thought better of the attack on Khabib’s wife and deleted the “towel” taunt.
But McGregor also attacked Khabib’s brother tweeting, “I smacked your brother around and took a s**t in his hat.”
Last week McGregor claimed he was retiring from fighting, but with these belligerent tweets, it appears that he is not quite done with the sport.
