UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi has eliminated the music of embattled pop star Michael Jackson, from her popular floor routine.
Video of Ohashi’s perfect ten routine went viral this year, but now the budding gymnastics star is pulling Jackson’s music from her routine after renewed accusations that he molested children resurfaced in the wake of the recent documentary, Leaving Neverland.
“The goal of my routine is pure joy, and after the documentary, not everyone was feeling that way, and you can never discredit someone’s feelings,” Ohashi told ESPN.
Ohashi began performing her revised routine on March 23. The routine now only features music from female artists such as Beyoncé, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, and others.
“A lot of people asked if I was nervous to change it, but I know today I felt the calmest I have ever felt competing, strangely,” the gymnast added.
Ohashi helped lead UCLA to win the Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships on Saturday scoring another perfect ten for her routine. Ohashi’s perfect ten, coupled with that of teammate Kyla Ross, propelled UCLA to take home the prize at the West Valley City, Utah, competition.
