The question of who would prevail between Anthony Pettis and Stephen Thompson was asked and answered in dramatic fashion on Saturday night.
During the second round of the UFC Nashville main event bout between Pettis, a former UFC lightweight champion, and Thompson, the UFC’s current #3 ranked welterweight contender, Pettis uncorked a superrman punch that devastated Thompson and ended the fight.
According to the Bloody Elbow:
Thompson seemed to be off to good start, landing his hands early and bloodying up his adversary. Then, at the very end of the second round, Pettis pulled out a crazy fight-ending superman punch that sent Thompson crashing lifeless to the floor. A couple of ground strikes connected before the fight was officially stopped.
The result is especially disappointing for Thompson who, after losing his last match against former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, was hoping to climb the ranks and earn another title shot against newly-crowned welterweight king Kamaru Usman.
After Saturday night, Thompson will likely have to continue to play the waiting game before getting a shot at Usman.
