Rickie Fowler ran afoul of one of Golf’s very stringent and specific rules last week at the WGC-Mexico Championship when he dropped a ball from shoulder height, as opposed to knee height.
Fowler let his feelings about the new rule be known, when speaking to reporters after the tournament:
I think, with the new rules that have been put in place, it’s not doing any favors for our sport. I think it will definitely be changed. We have been making fun of the knee drop for so long that it was ingrained the first time I took a drop this year. Like, ‘This is an iconic moment. I get to drop from my knee and look stupid.’ So, no, like I said, it was on me, but I think it’s a terrible change.
Having expressed himself in verbal form, on Thursday at the Honda Classic, Fowler took it to the next level and physically demonstrated his feelings on the rule.
Had Joe Buck been calling the tournament, he would have no doubt referred to Fowler’s antics as a “disgusting act.” However, regardless of anyone’s thoughts on the rule, Fowler’s version of the “drop” will no doubt result in some laughs.
