Washington (AFP) – Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is finally home for the holidays, released from hospital four weeks after suffering a frightening leg injury in an NFL game against Houston.
Smith’s wife, Elizabeth Smith, posted an update on Instagram on Sunday morning, with a photo of the player seated in front of a Christmas tree, his lap covered by a Redskins blanket and a Redskins mug in one hand.
“HOME…This last month has been a difficult ride,” Elizabeth Smith posted.
“Our family is beyond happy to have this man with us and home. This experience has given us great perspective and gratitude for all the people and blessings in our lives.
“We couldn’t have gotten through it without our amazing family, friends and community,” she added, giving a special thank you to the “relentless” doctors and hospital staff and the family of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.
Smith reportedly underwent multiple surgeries to repair two broken bones in his right leg, with his recovery disrupted by infection.
He was hurt in the third quarter of a November 18 game, his leg buckling awkwardly underneath him as he was sacked.
ESPN reported Sunday, citing league sources, that Smith’s prognosis is encouraging, although his NFL future remains uncertain.
