Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden admitted Tuesday that he and his staff considered, but then rejected, the idea of bringing in Colin Kaepernick in for a tryout.
Gruden told 106.7 The Fan that they gave some thought to the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, but it didn’t take them much time to reject the notion.
“He’s been talked about and discussed, but we will probably go a different direction,” Gruden said according to Pro Football Talk.
Washington gave workouts to several candidates including EJ Manuel, Kellen Clemens, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, and T.J. Yates. But, they did not bring in Kaepernick.
The Skins ultimately signed Mark Sanchez for the slot. The team also lost Colt McCoy after he fractured his right leg this week.
Colin Kaepernick turned free agent at the end of the 2016 season but has not found a team to sign him since. He claims the league has blackballed him because he spent the entirety of his last season protesting during the playing of the national anthem.
Kaepernick also filed a collusion case against the NFL claiming that league officials and team owners “colluded” to keep him from pursuing his NFL career after spending 2016 protesting during the anthem. In August, an arbitrator approved the case and ruled that it could continue to trial.
