In a recent interview, U.S. Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy revealed he would headline The Democrat National Committee’s LGBTQ event this summer.
Kenworthy, the British-born skier who has represented the U.S.A. since the New Zealand Games in 2011, told ABC News that he would headline the gala event, The Hill reported.
But even as he made his announcement, Kenworthy went on the attack against President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join the DNC at their LGBTQ Gala this Pride season,” Kenworthy exclaimed. “Over the last year, the Trump-Pence administration has pushed our community to the sidelines, attacking us for who we are and who we love.
“It’s time we take a stand against this administration by electing representatives this upcoming November who actively support and believe in equality for everyone,” the openly gay skier added.
The skier, who was unable to win any medals at the 2017 games in PeyongChang, South Korea, and has not won the gold since 2011, spent months attacking the president and vice president ahead of the 2017 Winter Games.
In February, for instance, Kenworthy attacked the choice of Mike Pence to lead the U.S. Olympic delegation. “He seems like such a strange choice, for me,” he said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
“To have somebody leading the delegation that’s directly attacked the LGBTQ community, and a Cabinet in general that just sort of stands against us and has tried to do things to set us back, it just seems like a bad fit,” he added according to The Hill.
For his part, the vice president denied the claims that he stands against the gay community.
Pence released a statement in February as he prepared to participate in the opening ceremony:
The vice president is proud to lead the U.S. delegation to the Olympics and support America’s incredible athletes. This accusation is totally false and has no basis in fact. Despite these misinformed claims, the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the U.S. athletes competing next month in Pyeongchang
The Democrat LGBTQ event is usually one of the party’s highest-earning fundraisers. Former Vice President Joe Biden headlined last year’s event.
The Democrat Party is badly in need of the cash, as well. In January, for instance, it was reported that in 2017 the Democrat National Committee had brought in but half the fundraising haul of the Republicans.
