NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is set to fine Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones to the tune of “millions,” for trying to derail Goodell’s contract extension, a report says.

The Cowboys owner had worked quite openly to put a crimp in Commissioner Goodell’s contract negotiations last year and now it appears that Goodell is looking for revenge, The New York Times reported on February 26.

According to insiders, the NFL is about to hand down a fine amounting “in the millions,” and saying that Jones’ actions attempting to undermine the commissioner were detrimental to the league. The report also says that Goodell has the backing to punish Jones from a group of NFL owners.

The chief issue is Jones’ efforts to sue the six team owners that sat on the compensation committee involved in Goodell’s contract negotiations. Jones will be ordered to pay all the legal fees on both sides of the issue associated with the case, the insiders say.

In November of last year, the Times reported that “Jones said in a conference call last Thursday with the six owners — those of the Chiefs, Falcons, Giants, Patriots, Steelers, and Texans — that legal papers were drawn up and would be served this Friday if the committee did not scrap its plans to extend Goodell’s contract.” However, when Jones informed those members of the compensation committee of his plans to sue the league, they reportedly asked him to stay out of their group’s meetings.

Jones ultimately dropped his plans to sue the NFL over Goodell’s compensation package, and the commish was officially awarded a renewal of his contract. By December Goodell had signed on to a contract extension reportedly worth some $200 million.

Goodell is also upset that Jones lobbied to keep Ezekiel Elliot from being suspended over charges of domestic violence. Jones lost that battle, too, with Elliot being handed a six-game suspension.

Jones countered that since the police never charged Elliot with any crimes, it was unfair for the league to penalize the player just on the say-so of a disgruntled ex-girlfriend.
