The union representing the Las Vegas Police Department, wrote the NFL a letter on Thursday afternoon, requesting that the league investigate Seahawks’ defensive end Michael Bennett for making, “false and offensive” claims about their officers. Specifically, Bennett’s claim that the officers detained him because he was, “a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
However, the NFL says that they no investigation of Bennett will occur.
In a statement to Pro Football Talk, NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy said, “There is no allegation of a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy, and therefore there is no basis for an NFL investigation.”
While McCarthy’s statement is true, in a strictly legal sense, the question that quickly emerges is: Why isn’t there an allegation of a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy?
Michael Bennett has told, at least three lies, pertaining to the incident that played out on the night of the Mayweather-McGregor fight. In fact, Bennett’s own attorney, has publicly stated that race had nothing to do with Bennett’s detainment:
Dismissing the absurd notion that Bennett and his lawyer have never met or talked to each other before yesterday, it’s clear that Bennett knew he was lying when he made a slanderous and defamatory accusation against the Las Vegas Police Department in his Twitter post. Given that, how can making a demonstrably false and public accusation against law enforcement, not qualify as bad personal conduct?
Not to mention that Bennett’s claims about not knowing why he was being detained, and, sitting in the squad car for “an eternity,” were also shown to be wrong in yesterday’s press conference. Bottom line, if the NFL had any interest in investigating Bennett, they could easily find enough there in the publicity stunt that he clearly pulled on Wednesday.
However, given that the commissioner issued a statement supporting Bennett before the Las Vegas PD had a chance to bring any facts of the case to light, it’s clear that the NFL has already bowed to it’s social justice warriors. For now, the Las Vegas PD will be the only people getting investigated, because that’s the way the NFL wants it.
