The Las Vegas police union has written a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, demanding that the league investigate Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett for making false accusations of racial profiling against their officers.
The September 7 letter, issued by Las Vegas Police Protective Association President Detective Steve Grammas, insisted that a thorough investigation into the incident will prove that the officers involved in the temporary detention of the Seahawks player will be vindicated.
The letter ended, saying that, “Michael Bennett’s claim that our officers are racist is false and offensive to the men and women of law enforcement:”
The letter emphasizes, “Our officers, who are both minorities, had the legal right, and obligation, to detain Bennett based upon the nature of the call and Bennett’s unusual and suspicions actions. Our officers did not detain Bennett because he was, ‘a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time.’”
Bennett accused Vegas police with slamming him to the ground, holding a gun to his head, and threatening to “blow my f-ing head off” when officers entered a casino searching for a possible live shooter after last weekend’s Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight. Bennett is also claiming the police racially profiled him.
