Despite the fact that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has dominated the Chicago Bears this season, the Chicago Tribune couldn’t seem to bring itself to mention his name in a tweet about his breakup with actress Olivia Munn.
In an April 7 tweet, the Chicago paper posted a headline noting that, “Actress Olivia Munn and boyfriend break up, according to reports.”
Strangely the paper couldn’t bring itself to mention the Packers quarterback by name, relegating him to merely “and boyfriend.”
Granted, the tweet connected to a story where the quarterback’s name is prominently featured, but it is strange that the paper demoted Rodgers in its tweet. Especially since in Chicago, Rodgers may be at least as well known as the actress he was dating — maybe even more so in this big football town.
For TheBigLead.com, Kyle Koster slammed the Trib for the slight, calling the “boyfriend” label little else but “taking a shot” at Rodgers.
Koster also noted that the tweet makes Chicago look like a bunch of sore losers over Rodgers’ domination of the Bears on the gridiron.
“To the victors go the spoils and the ability to run mouths, take shots, and demean,” Koster wrote. “That’s why the are called bragging rights. When a loser does it, it comes off as sour grapes and small. There’s a reason why ‘scoreboard’ is such a devastating rebuttal.”
“Is slighting Rodgers in a headline or poking fun of his relationship trouble the best Chicago can do? Isn’t that kind of sad, a hollow ‘victory’ after a decade of getting embarrassed by Rodgers on the field, where it actually matters?” Koster concluded.
