Former Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa again denies he ever used steroids, and even compares the constant accusations he receives to the trials faced by Jesus Christ.
In a new interview with one-time Cubs employee Chuck Wasserstrom, the home run king was asked if he gets upset with the constant assumption that he used performance enhancing drugs.
Sosa, who still holds the Cubs home run record of 545 homers, bristled at the accusation he has heard for well over a decade, and invoked the trials and tribulations of Jesus of Nazareth to describe his own experience.
“Chuck, it’s like Jesus Christ when he came to Jerusalem,” Sosa said. “Everybody thought Jesus Christ was a witch — and he was our savior. So if they talk (trash) about Jesus Christ, what about me? Are you kidding me?”
Apparently the constant accusations dogging Sosa have made him feel somewhat persecuted if his allusion to Christ is any indication.
It was never proven that the seven-time All-Star and 1998 National League MVP ever took any performance enhancing drugs and Sosa has always denied having done so. A list of players including Sosa who had supposedly tested positive for drugs in 2003 was never substantiated.
Despite the legal matter of a lack of proof, though, many sports writers and fans take it for granted that Sosa used PEDs merely because he attained such an amazing home run hitting record.
