Los Angeles (AFP) – Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota will have surgery on his broken leg on Wednesday and his recovery will take four to five months, Titans coach Mike Mularkey said Monday.

Mariota broke his right fibula in Saturday’s 38-17 NFL loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mularkey told reporters that Mariota will have a plate inserted at the point of the fracture.

The second-year signal-caller is expected to return in time for off-season team activities in May or June.

“He’s upbeat here today, he understands the circumstances,” Mularkey said. “He’s really disappointed he couldn’t finish the game. I felt like he was upbeat today when he came in.”

Mariota’s right foot bent awkwardly behind him as he was chased out of the pocket and sacked by Jaguars defensive lineman Sheldon Day in the third quarter.

Mariota taken off the field in a cart and was on crutches after the contest.

The Titans were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday after their defeat and the Houston Texans’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
