As the media continues to focus on a decade-old audio tape of GOP nominee Donald Trump’s boorish talk about women, the U.S. Women’s Open is coming under pressure to move its July tournament away from the candidate’s New Jersey golf club.
The United States Golf Association faces calls to move the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open scheduled for July at Trump’s National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Sporting News reports.
The call was most recently made by USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, who insisted that the USGA faces a “terrible problem.”
Saying a tournament focusing on women’s sports should “dump Trump National and fond another location,” Brennan said the USGA needs to be mindful of their charge.
“The USGA is not just another business running another golf tournament,’ Brennan wrote in her October 12 column. “It is the national governing body for golf in this nation, with a mission to look out for the best interests of boys and girls and men and women in a game that millions love. The USGA has focused particular and admirable attention the past few years on the game’s decades-long discrimination against women and girls, and it has made a special effort to encourage them to take up the game.”
Brennan claimed that the USGA had not returned her phone calls about the issue.
The USA Today columnist isn’t alone in calling for the move. Other advocates and sports writers have also called for the tournament to be moved off the Trump property for the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open. The call is an echo from demands over other, past events, as well.
Back in June, for instance, the PGA announced a move of the WGC-Cadillac Championship Tournament from its 53-year home at Trump’s Doral resort near Miami, Florida, to Mexico City for 2017. Trump’s Doral facility also lost a NASCAR awards banquet event in July of 2015.
