Boston Leadoff Man Betts Hits 3 Bombs to Beat Baltimore

Leadoff man Mookie Betts got on base. But he just as quickly got off base.

The Red Sox right fielder hit three home runs last night, providing all the offense in five RBI that Boston needed to get past the Baltimore Orioles in a 6-2 road victory.

Betts cleared fences in all directions. He hit a bomb to center in the first, homered to left in the second, and went deep to right in the seventh. Together, his three hits traveled 1,161 feet.

Betts’s big night comes as part of a Red Sox offensive explosion that includes David Ortiz turning back the clock to lead the majors in RBI and 29- and 24-game hitting streaks by Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. The win further extends Boston’s lead to three games over Baltimore and gives them the best record in the American League.

“This is probably the best night,” Betts told reporters after the game. “It’s the first time I’ve ever done that.”
