All Pac-12 UCLA Bruins football player Ishmael Adams appears in court this afternoon after his arrest on felony robbery charges on Sunday morning.
The defensive back and kick returner allegedly used force to rob a cellphone from an Uber driver.
An athletic department spokesman for UCLA released a statement that read, “We are aware of the situation and continue to gather information. As this is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
The 21-year-old Adams is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Adams holds the distinction of being the only UCLA player named as first team all Pac-12 in 2014.
Adams durability served him well over the last two seasons. He managed to start all 26 games and returned two interceptions for touchdowns. A career highlight came in 2014 when Adams returned an electrifying 100-yard kickoff for a touchdown against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Coach of the preseason 13th-ranked Bruins, Jim Mora, told the the Los Angeles Times that Adams “plays with that chip on his shoulder in practice, in games…. He’s a fighter, a scrapper.” Mora added, that he has a “knack for making big plays. When he gets the ball in his hands, there is no way he is going to go down easy.”
Mora stated that because the pending legal matter is ongoing, he will make no further comments.
A bizarre tweet by Adams a few days before the alleged robbery reveals that Adams may be suffering from some type of mental anguish:
