Despite being fired as the coach of Penn State’s football program after revelations that a former defensive coordinator had abused minors, coach Joe Paterno is being honored with a new beer being branded with his name and image.
A brewery in Latrobe, Pennsylvania—hometown of coach Paterno’s widow, Sue—is being formulated now at the Duquesne Brewing Company.
The brew is to be a premium American lager and is set to hit stores in August. The 12-ounce cans will feature a large photo of the long-time Nittany Lions coach and some of the proceeds will go to the various charities the Paternos support.
Coach Paterno’s son, Jay, said that his mother quickly fell in love with the proposal of the new beer.
“That this is an American company in an increasingly foreign-dominated industry, that it brews in Pennsylvania, that it provides union jobs — all of those things just resonated with my mom and all of us,” Jay Paterno said last week.
The coach, one of the winningest coaches in college football, was fired from the university in 2011 after the child sex scandal that put defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky in jail.
The NCAA vacated 111 games of Paterno’s winning record, though the NCAA returned the wins to the school’s record early in 2015.
Paterno died only two months after his firing.
