Chicken and beer has evolved into the digital age.
Four years after the Boston Red Sox blew a playoff berth during a stretch in which pitchers ate fried chicken and drank beer during games, Pablo Sandoval has been caught “liking” pictures of a woman on Instagram. The offense came during the seventh inning of last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves as Sandoval awaited a turn in the batting order that never came that frame.
Boston ultimately lost Wednesday night’s road game 5-2. Panda went 2-for-4. Notably, he singled in the eighth after awarding the woman his online approval, allegedly while using the bathroom, in the seventh.
The Red Sox nevertheless benched the 3rd baseman for tonight’s game in Atlanta. Sandoval, after winning another World Series ring with the San Francisco Giants last fall, signed a five-year, $95 million contract with Boston in the offseason. He bats .270 with six home runs, and 23 RBI. He struggles at the hot corner with nine errors, two fewer than he made in all of last season.
“I broke the team rules,” Sandoval told reporters. “I should be punished.”
The man shows bad judgment. Who can gainsay his taste?
