Phillies fans were not very happy to hear that Philadelphia’s general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. considers trading his club’s veterans, namely Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon, Ryan Howard, and Chase Utley.

Fans were even less happy to hear that Amaro doesn’t think very highly of their knowledge of baseball. CSN Philly reported that the GM reacted a bit harshly when fans criticized him for being too conservative by failing to move some of their minor league talent up to the bigs.

“They don’t understand the game,” Amaro said. “They don’t understand the process. There’s a process. And then they bitch and complain because we don’t have a plan. There’s a plan in place and we’re sticking with the plan. We can’t do what’s best for the fan. We have to do what’s best for the organization so the fan can reap the benefit of it later on. That’s the truth.”

Fans took to twitter to let the general manager know exactly how they felt about his scathing remarks, especially in the face of their dismal season. The Phillies have only won 19 games out of their first 48, on course to lose a hundred for the season.

On Tuesday Amaro walked his comments back saying that his negative remarks were not directed at all fans just the ones that annoy him:

“I didn’t say they don’t understand,” Amaro explained. “Some fans don’t understand it’s not all Philadelphia fans.”

“When I said that, it’s more about the fan that really doesn’t understand the process — and it’s not all fans.”

Hopefully for the ex-Phillies outfielder and pinch hitter, things start looking up and “Fire Ruben Amaro Jr.” fans don’t get their way.
