The President’s Trophy-winning New York Rangers decided to show their face in Tampa Bay as they destroyed the Lightning to tie the series.
Both teams played reasonably well in the first period. The hits and taunts were fierce.
Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and Lightning goalie Ben Bishop played at the top of their games. However, Rick Nash broke the barrier with only his third goal of the playoffs.
The Lightning received two advantages in the beginning of the second period. Marc Staal committed a holding penalty only 28 seconds into the period while Chris Kreider was called for tripping at 7:28. The Lightning did shine on the power play, but the Rangers almost scored short handed while Lundqvist protected his net.
Yet, Lightning captain Steven Stamkos slammed the puck past Lundqvist to tie the game.
It was not enough to bring down the Rangers. Only four minutes later Chris Kreider scored to push the Rangers up 2-1.
Confidence can do wonders for a team because not even two minutes later Keith Yandle scored.
It was almost too easy for the Rangers. The Lightning quickly faded into sunshine as the Rangers piled on the goals. Martin St. Louis and Nash both scored goals in the third on power plays. Weirdly enough the penalties committed were on both. It was sweet revenge for the two men!
The Lightning had enough and tempers flared on both sides. Look at the penalty summary in the third period.
Fights. Hits.
Trash talking in the penalty box.
Game 5 is Sunday night at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN.
