After the release of a video depicting members of an Oklahoma University fraternity joining in a racist chant, four-star college football recruit Jean Delance has pulled out of his commitment to the university.
“Very uneducated people,” Delance told the Dallas/Fort Worth CBS affiliate on Monday. “I wouldn’t want my son or child to go anywhere like that. I wouldn’t want my brothers to go anywhere like that. It was just very disturbing to me. I didn’t like it.”
The top high school player had previously taken to Twitter to alert fans of his decision.
“Firstly want to say thank you for giving me an opportunity to get my education and play football at OU,” Delance wrote, “but I have Officially de-committed from Oklahoma University. Nothing to do with the staff or team, I’ll be reopening my recruitment due to personal reasons.”
The player later announced he was quickly offered a deal from the University of Alabama.
Perhaps hoping to head off these sorts of reactions against his team and school, Sooners head coach Bob Stoops attended a protest rally on Monday following the release of the now infamous video featuring fraternity brothers using the n-word in a chant on a chartered bus.
Coach Stoops and several players were active in the complaints against the fraternity. The coach also told the media that the video was “appalling.”
“It’s sad the ignorance that can still be there with some people,” Stoops said yesterday. “It’s just appalling.
