PHOENIX, AZ—Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson told Breitbart Sports on Thursday that he appeared in a public service announcement (PSA) for ObamaCare because he wanted to help people and influence change.
Wilson and cornerback Richard Sherman recorded a PSA urging Americans to sign up for ObamaCare that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released earlier this month.
“When your health or the health of the game is on the line, nothing is more important than quality coverage,” Sherman says in the spot. “So make the right call,” Wilson responds to Sherman. “Visit HealthCare.gov and get covered.”
Why did the players agree to promote a program so unpopular with Americans?
We weren’t able to get close enough to Sherman this week to inquire about his motivations for appearing in the spot. But on Thursday, Breitbart Sports asked Wilson at the team hotel in Phoenix why he agreed to promote the Affordable Care Act.
“We are just talking about how to help change people’s lives and help effect change, that is why,” Wilson told Breitbart Sports. Wilson appeared uncomfortable after delivering his terse answer, and quickly moved on to other questions as Breitbart Sports posed a follow-up.
HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell expressed her gratitude to the Seahawks standouts earlier this month: “I want to thank Russell and Richard for volunteering their time to raise awareness about the importance of enrolling in health insurance coverage and join them in calling for people to visit HealthCare.gov and check out their options.”
