Defeating the odds, about 7,500 to 1 for a professional golfer, Rory McIlroy shot his first professional hole-in-one on the par-3 15th hole at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday.
Perhaps what is just as impressive is that Rory wielded a nine-iron on the 177 yard hole to accomplish the feat. By comparison the avid golfer writing this article would have likely drawn a five-wood from the same distance.
At any rate, Golf.Com reported that McIlroy was back from an extended vacation before teeing it up to kickoff his 2015 campaign. The world’s number-0ne ranked golfer comes off a huge 2014 season, winning four times including the 143rd Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and the PGA Championship at Valhalla.
McIlroy carded a 66 Friday to keep himself only two shots behind leader Martin Kaymer.
