According to TMZ Sports, former NFL player Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, is engaged to his boyfriend, former University of Missouri swimmer Vito Cammisano.
A female friend of Cammisano’s from the University of Missouri swim team posted a congratulatory message on Instagram:
People, he is officially off the market!!!!! My beautiful friend @vitcamm is getting married!!!!!!! (AHHHHHHHHH!) I love you so much Vit. So damn excited … so ready to celebrate! @mikeysam52#vitoisengaged
Sam “liked” the message.
Sam famously kissed Cammisano on national TV when he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the last round of the 2014 NFL draft. The Rams later released him, whereupon the Dallas Cowboys signed him for their practice squad. They cut him from the squad in October.
Sam and Cammisano are vacationing in Europe, where this week Sam celebrated his birthday on January 7. He posted a shot of their visit to St. Peter’s in Rome on Twitter:
Sam was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year his senior year at Missouri. At the NFL Scouting Combine before the draft, Sam disappointed those hoping for a better performance; he finished behind every other defensive lineman except for UCLA’s Cassius Marsh in the bench press, recording only 17 reps at 225 lbs and ran a lead-footed 4.9 forty. The Rams kept Ethan Westbrooks, an undrafted free agent, rather than keep the openly-gay player on the roster despite Sam recording three preseason sacks.
