The San Diego State baseball team gathered to play on Sunday in their annual Halloween Game, donning costumes and playing together for the first time since the passing of their beloved coach “Mr. Padre,” Tony Gwynn.
ABC News reported that Gwynn had started the tradition of the Halloween intrasquad game three years ago and that he was on the players’ minds as they carried on dressed as Donald Duck, the always classy Anchorman news team, Gumby, Abraham Lincoln, and an assortment of different animals.
“I’m Forrest Gump, when he runs cross country,” said Aztec standout third baseman Ty France. “I picked Forrest because I actually just watched the movie the other day but it’s just fun for the fans…all the kids that come out and see us in goofy uniforms, let them know it’s still a kids game.”
Gwynn, who was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 2007 and was the Aztec’s head baseball coach from 2002 through the 2014 season, was a huge fan of Michael Jackson. After the game, the team got on the field and performed the “Thriller” dance as a tribute to Gwynn.
Last year, the Halloween game became a viral sensation.
