Michael Sam responded to the comments of former Colts and Bucs coach Tony Dungy that he would not have drafted the openly-gay pass rusher. He’s just happy Jeff Fisher coaches the Rams.
On Tuesday, the former University of Missouri defensive end, drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams, expressed to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, “Thank God he wasn’t the St. Louis Rams coach. (laughs) I have a lot of respect for Coach Dungy.”
The Rams reporter further tweeted Sam’s take: “And like everyone in America, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.”
The Tampa Tribune reported earlier this week that Dungy said, “I wouldn’t have taken him. Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth…things will happen.”
NBC posted an apology from Dungy for contributing to the circus surrounding Sam on Tuesday.
