A two-day auction of the entire contents of the Pontiac Silverdome was recently completed giving fans the opportunity to buy all sorts of stadium memorabilia. Up for sale: the contents of the stadium’s 25 bathrooms.
All 25 bathrooms were sold off in the auction, including urinals, toilets, sheet metal privacy partitions, sinks, and other hardware.
“People usually buy those for the partitions, which they can repaint and use or use metal to scrap,” Richard Montgomery, owner of RJM Auctioneers, told ESPN. “They usually leave the urinals. I certainly wouldn’t want one.”
Whether fans were interested in the bathrooms or not is debatable, but there were some choice offerings of NFL related items on the auction block nonethelss.
“For Lions fans, the highlights were the two turf end zones with ‘Lions’ on them,” Darren Rovell reported, “which sold for $1,950 each, and a ‘Welcome To Super Bowl XVI’ sign that went for $914.”
Stadium seats were also sold for $100 singly or $360 for a set of four.
The Silverdome secured its place in NFL history having served as home base for the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001 and in 1982 the stadium hosted Super Bowl XVI between the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals. It also served as home court for the Detroit Pistons from 1978 to 1988.
The building, which hasn’t served as home to a major sports franchise for more than a decade, was sold off by the city in 2009 for a little more than a half-million dollars–a major loss financially. It served as a venue for concerts and other activities until 2012. But now the Silverdome is set to be razed because over the winter of 2012 part of the roof collapsed.
