No Flop: World Cup Opener Smashes U.S. TV Ratings Records

The World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia set TV ratings records in the United States, with a 3.2 overnight rating on ESPN and another 5.1 million viewers on Univision, the spanish-language station.

According to Deadline, the game drew a “3.2 overnight rating in the metered markets, a 52% increase compared to the 2010 opening match” and it was “the highest overnight rating for a World Cup opening game on record.”

Brazil won the game 3-1 after a controversial penalty kick was awarded to Brazil after Fred took a dive in the penalty area.
