I can still remember my first-grade school librarian, Mrs. Schultz dropping the bombshell on us. “I don’t have a TV in my house,” she said. That concept was very foreign to me. As a fan of television coming from a house with multiple TVs, her statement seemed impossible to comprehend. A new show on Sportsman Channel is featuring Americans who have gone even further.
America Unplugged premieres Thursday at 8 p.m. ET/PT and focuses on those of us now living “off the grid”. Forget about TV, these folks have dumped reliance on local government when it comes to electricity, water, sanitation, heating and cooling. Sound strange? Maybe. But, over 400,000 Americans are living this way every day by choice.
Sportsman Channel is heavily promoting America Unplugged after a successful first season of Amazing America with Sarah Palin introduced the network to many new viewers. The program will feature those living a self-sustaining lifestyle. Not only are hundreds of thousands completely “off the grid”, millions are taking some steps toward self-reliance. Americans are stocking pantries and installing generators as they prepare to fend for themselves in any circumstance.
“America Unplugged will reflect the spirit of Sportsman Channel’s ‘Red, Wild & Blue’ lifestyle,” said Marc Fein, executive vice president of programming and production for Sportsman Channel. “Viewers will get a true understanding, through very unique and refreshing stories, of Americans who have chosen to live off the grid and lead an independent lifestyle.”
The host of the show lends much credibility. Former U.S. Navy SEAL/Sniper Cade Courtley will highlight the stories of eight Americans – some with families – who have ‘pulled the plug.’ The series will examine the constant effort it takes to live exclusively off the land and the daily struggle to provide food and shelter.
Courtley will introduce viewers to non-dependent civilians who have dumped creature comforts and have taken significant steps to control their own safety, survival, and self-reliance in the wake of natural disasters and civil disturbances. Living in less than ideal conditions hits home with Courtley. The former U.S. Navy SEAL/Sniper and Security Contractor spent more than 15 years in some of the most hostile places in the world.
There seems to be a theme going on at Sportsman Channel: Unique, interesting programming hosted by credible personalities. Just like Palin delivered big time expressing her knowledge and love of our country, Courtley will look to offer expertise on why millions of Americans are living “off the grid.”
America Unplugged should grab the attention of viewers looking for something different. Even though the stars of the show won’t be tuning in. At least not from their “off the grid” homes.
