The Bristol County, Massachusetts district attorney announced Thursday the indictment of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on charges of assault and battery and threats made to a jailer. The alleged incidents took place at the Bristol County House of Corrections in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

The threat to a guard involved allegedly making machine gun sounds and death threats against his family. TMZ reported in April that an “ex-inmate told investigators Aaron was noticeably losing weight in jail and would run various schemes to get extra food…like putting an insect on a half eaten meal and then complain to officials so he could get a fresh serving. But the ex-inmate claimed Aaron pulled his schemes ‘one too many times’ which pissed off the officers…who put an end to the extra food.” That allegedly catalyzed Hernandez’s threats.

In February, Hernandez allegedly beat up a fellow inmate with whom he had been feuding. Despite coming out on the wrong end of the assault, the inmate, Andrew Booker, refuses to testify. His attorney told reporters, “He doesn’t want to be a rat.”

Neither, allegedly, did the man Hernandez is accused of killing. The last player to catch a Tom Brady Super Bowl touchdown pass awaits trial for the killing of Odin Lloyd. Two friends have been indicted in the murder as well. The former Patriot remains a subject of speculation in the killings of two immigrants who exchanged words with Hernandez’s group in a Boston nightclub the summer prior to Lloyd’s murder.
