A new online poll found that Americans just are not interested in the the World Cup, which is the world’s top sporting event.
According to the poll, “two in three Americans do not plan to follow this year’s tournament,” only “7 percent said they anticipated following it closely,” 86 percent of Americans “said they either know nothing or only a little bit about the World Cup, and more than two-thirds did not know Brazil is the 2014 host nation.”
MLS is booming with a new franchises in New York and others potentially in Atlanta and Miami, but, as Reuters notes, “soccer still has a long way to go before its marquee event can stake a claim alongside football’s Super Bowl, the National Basketball Association finals, and baseball’s World Series in American minds.”
Hispanics, though, are twice as likely to follow the tournament, with one-third of Hispanic Americans saying they would follow the tournament closely.
The Reuters/Ipsos online poll, which is not as scientific as other polls, was conducted among 1,416 adult Americans from April 7-11 and the margin of error is +/- three percentage points.
