Former President George W. Bush sent Alabama field goal kicker Cade Foster, who received death threats after missing three field goals in the Iron Bowl that Alabama heartbreakingly lost, a letter of support.

The letter read:

“Dear Cade (#43), Life has its setbacks. I know! However you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best- Sincerely- another 43 George Bush”

After the Iron Bowl, Alabama leaders like quarterback A.J. McCarron and linebacker C.J. Mosely emphatically defended Foster, who was not in on the last play of the game–even though he is a distance kicker–because Alabama head coach Nick Saban did not have confidence in him. Adam Griffith’s 57-yard field goal attempt with one second left in regulation was eventually returned 109 yards for a touchdown by Auburn’s Chris Davis in what was arguably the greatest ending in the history of college football.

The letter was dated December 3–four days after the Iron Bowl.

Foster posted a picture of the letter on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday and said he would be “framing this.”
