Minneapolis Police Federation (MPF) president John Delmonico believes the NFL security rule that bars off-duty cops from carrying their firearms into games is “a violation of [those officers’] rights.”
On October 7 Breitbart News reported that a new NFL security measure now bars off-duty police from carrying guns into stadiums although it’s normal for them to a carry a gun 24/7 in case they come face-to-face with a criminal whom they arrested and who may have revenge on his mind.
NFL head of security Jeff Miller dismissed this concern, saying, “The likelihood that there’s a need for the use of force by an off-duty officer is extremely remote.”
But according to CBS Minnesota, Minneapolis Police Federation president Delmonico says it goes deeper than that. It does not matter whether off-duty officers ever have to use their guns. Rather, what matters is that their rights, “as determined by state law,” are being violated.
Said Delmonico: “State law governs the facts that we carry our guns off-duty in any public facility and any facility in the city of Minneapolis, which encompasses the dome [where the Vikings play].”
He sent a letter to the Minnesota Attorney General asking him to review the security measure and decide whether the NFL “can do this or not.”
