The Washington Redskins edged out the Chicago Bears 45-41 with a last minute touchdown by Roy Helu. The loss was costly for Chicago, though, as Bears quarterback Jay Cutler left in the second quarter with an injury.
Cutler was sacked by Chris Baker and landed awkwardly on his hip on Baker’s knee. He limped off the field and went to the locker room for X-rays. He has a groin injury and a source told ESPN the team will re-sign Jordan Palmer on Monday. Cutler was only 3 for 8 with 28 yards and one interception.
Josh McCown came in for relief for Cutler and was 14 for 20 with 204 yards and one touchdown. Devin Hester returned a punt return 81 yards for a touchdown. It was his 19th return for a touchdown, tying him with Deion Sanders for most all-time.
Robert Griffin III was stellar. He was 18 for 29 for 298 yards and one interceptions to give the Redskins a much needed win. Helu gave the team three rushing touchdowns and his 14-yard touchdown was the team’s second first-half offensive touchdown this season. The offense was able to stomp out a depleted Bears defense.
The Bears went ahead with 3:57 left in the game with a Martellus Bennett seven-yard touchdown run. However, that is a lot of time left in a close football game, and the Redskins offense knew they had to wipe off as much time as possible. Their next drive started at their own 20, and they managed to erase 3:12 from the clock. With short passes, Griffin led the team 77 yards for a Helu touchdown. The Bears attempted to move and stay out of bounds, but McCown was sacked for seven yards to end the game.
