As gay marriage advocates work to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in Oregon to expand marriage to include homosexuals, the Portland Trail Blazers have announced their support for the effort.
“The Portland Trail Blazers are in support of the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection ballot initiative. We do so as believers in individual choice as a fundamental right of all people,” the organization said in a statement that consisted only of these two sentences.
Last week, the city’s two professional soccer teams endorsed the effort, but the announcement is believed the be the first of its kind among the major sports leagues. Still, such a move harkens back to the Phoenix Suns when they announced opposition to Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law and wore “Los Suns” jerseys in protest.
