Earl Campbell, an outstanding running back and revered figure at the University of Texas, is the latest to vocalize support for Mack Brown’s removal as the Longhorns’ head coach.
“Nobody likes to get fired or leave a job, but things happen,” Campbell told a Houston station. “I’d go on record and say yes, Ithink it’s time.”
The legendary running back went on to cite age as a reason for Brown’s collapse. In addition, he applauded USC’s decision to remove its coach and said it was highly difficult to speak out against the coach who had accomplished so much with the program.
As expected, the comments wounded Brown.
“Earl has done so much for Texas,” Brown responded. “He will always bewelcomed at our school. I’m disappointed in his comments, but he’sentitled to his opinion.”
It may be tough for Brown to salvage his job at this point. In addition to mounting losses, the complete lack of physicality of his teams has grated the Longhorns’ faithful. Particularly with the USC job open, a Texas vacancy could make for an intriguing offseason.
