San Francisco police investigator Scott Warnke did not immediately return texts and calls from Breitbart Sports regarding the investigation of the fatal stabbing of a Dodgers fan after the Giants 6-4 win Wednesday night. The communications department for the Giants informed Breitbart Sports that they were “still sorting out details” shortly after 11 a.m. pacific time but would issue an advisory to Breitbart Sports and other outlets as quickly as possible.
Fans of the Dodgers, who have reversed roles with the defending world champion Giants by going last to first this season, were extremely loud during the game last night. Barry Zito won what was probably his last start with the Giants to hurt the chances of the Dodgers having home field advantage against the Braves or possibly the Cardinals in the playoffs, and apparently the back-and-forth played out into the parking lot.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr told the San Francisco Chronicle that the victim was a Dodgers fan (https://bit.ly/1bIlqcz), and the Medical Examiner’s office has identified the victim as Jonathan Denver, 24, according to the Associated Press, which later reported that the death was “sparked” by the Dodgers-Giants rivalry. And the Giants released the following statement:
We were deeply saddened to learn of last night’s horrific incident that occurred several blocks from the ballpark and resulted in the tragic death of 24-year old Jonathan Denver. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
While details are still emerging, we want to be clear that there is absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence.
The Giants are working with the San Francisco Police Department to step up enforcement in and around the ballpark tonight and throughout the rest of this final home stand. We will also observe a moment of silence in memory of Mr. Denver before tonight’s game.
The communications department already had to handle incidents including the beating of a teenage fan when the Colts ran over the 49ers 27-7 on Sunday, and the beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow by two men in Dodgers gear following the March 31, 2011, home opener between the two longtime rivals at Dodgers Stadium.
