ESPN: Mike Tirico's Omission of 'Redskins' on MNF Was Unintentional

The Sr. Director of Communications and PR for ESPN told Breitbart Sports Tuesday morning that Mike Tirico’s omission of the word “Redskins” was simply a flub, and not a political statement. “I talked to Mike last night, and he told me immediately it was just a mistake. He used the plural ‘Giants’ and then started to say ‘Washington,’ so he tried to make it plural (to get ‘Washingtons.’),” said Bill Hofheimer, who earlier in the year unveiled the futuristic SportsCenter set that will be used beginning in 2014 (see photo below).

Hofheimer noted that Tirico had used “Redskins” throughout the Eagles-Redskins game he handled last week for ESPN, and that he proceeded to tweet out a correction after the two talked Monday night.

Breitbart Sports has reported regularly on the ongoing attempts to get the Redskins to drop their long-time name, with the most recent story noting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated the NFL had to take note if one person was offended by the name. Buzzfeed reported the incident Monday night, and at the time they had been unsuccessful in reaching ESPN for comment.
