AFC South: Titans Defense Dominates, Next Plays at Houston

The Tennessee Titans pulled off the big upset of the day, with a defense that improved from last in the league to one that allowed only 195 yards while forcing two fumbles and registering five sacks of Ben Roethlisberger. The team rating almost as high as the division-favorite Houston Texans, and we will quickly learn if they are for real when they travel to Houston for their next game. Andrew Luck was brilliant as the Colts survived, but they will go in as underdogs against the Dolphins this week. All three will get to beat up on the Jaguars, who rated two touchdowns worst than then second worst team in the league (the Browns). The Week 1 ratings are:

AFC SOUTH Massey Better/Worse 1-day rank Result
Houston 1.9   1.9 MON at SD
Tennessee -6.7 15 0.8 won at Pitt 16-9
Indianapolis -4.0 -2 -5.0 won vs. Oak 21-17
Jacksonville -11.5 -29 -26.0 lost vs KC 2-28

The 1-day rank is the average between how many points better or worse than average each team is on www.masseyratings.com and how many points better or worse the team did in that game than the expected point spread on www.masseyratings.com. A “+5.0” means the team was considered 5 points better than the average team in the league that day.
