According to sources for USA Today, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is preparing to ban New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez from the game for life. Eight others will be suspended by the weekend, according to the report, and will receive 50 game suspensions; the players include All-Stars Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers and Jhonny Peralta of the Detroit Tigers. A-Rod’s attorney, David Cornwell, has said he will appeal any suspension. The other players are said to be ready to accept their punishments.
Documents from Biogenesis, the Miami clinic allegedly involved with doping, show that A-Rod was taking performance-enhancing drugs from 2010-2012.
Rodriguez is widely considered one of the best hitters in Major League history. He has a career batting average of .300, 647 home runs, and 2,901 hits. He follows in the footsteps of other greats linked with performance-enhancing drugs including Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. This year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony initiated zero modern players, and left out stars who played during the so-called Steroid Era including Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Edgar Martinez, Larry Walker, Mark McGwire, and Rafael Palmeiro.
