Kicking off a four game series, the Detroit Tigers extended their divisional lead over the Cleveland Indians who had been closing the gap before their current three game losing streak and Detroit’s four straight victories.
Pitching in the 7-0 win for the Tigers was Rick Porcello, who helped the AL Central leader extend their season record against the Indians to 7-2. Justin Masterson, the losing pitcher for Cleveland, is considered a likely All-Star and was favored going in.
Tigers Third Baseman Miguel Cabrera batted in one run for the Tigers, bringing his MLB leading RBI total to 86.
In positive news for Cleveland, second baseman Jason Kipnis extended his hit streak to 16 games and his on-base streak to 36 games.
In other contests, the third place Royals were defeated 6-3 by the A’s, the fourth place Twins lost 4-0 at the hands of the Blue Jays, and the last place White Sox suffered a tough 8-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Minnesota, which not too long ago was competing for third, has now suffered six straight losses.
