AL Central Round-up: Indians on the Verge of Top Spot

The Cleveland Indians (43-38) are now only one game behind the Detroit Tigers for the lead in the AL Central after they defeated the Chicago White Sox and saw Detroit lose to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Joe Martinez, pitching in his first MLB game this season after being called up on Saturday, was credited with the win. However, it was ultimately a single from Nick Swisher that broke a 3-3 tie in the 8th inning. Chicago fell to 32-46 in the loss and remain in last place.

Another young pitcher vaulted the Twins (36-41) to victory over division rival Kansas City (37-41) as Kyle Gibson, four years removed from being a first-round draft pick and having already undergone Tommy John surgery, led Minnesota to a 6-2 victory to inch closer to overtaking the Royals for third place.

The Tigers, now 4-6 in their last 10, fell to the Rays 4-3 with a controversial ending that saw standout Tiger Miguel Cabrera brushed back off the plate by an inside pitch from Fernando Rodney. Detroit is still clinging to that one game lead with a 43-36 record.
