Atlanta 4, Kansas City 3
The Braves pulled ahead on a Jason Hayward home run in the 7th inning and hung on to beat the Royals, 4-3, in Kansas City. Kris Medlen (5-7) got the win to improve to 4-1 in June; Tim Collins (2-2) took the loss in relief of Ervin Santana for the Royals.
The game was neck-and-neck throughout, with the Royals’ Eric Hosmer tying the game in the 5th with a two-run homer off of Medlen. The Royals had the game tying run in scoring position with no one out in the 9th against Craig Kimbrel, but Kimbrel recovered to notch his 22nd save.
Washington 7, Arizona 5
The Nationals got back to .500 with a 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks Tuesday night. Gio Gonzalez (4-3) won a game for the first time since May 5, an eight game stretch where he had an ERA around 2.00 but could not get the run support needed to notch a win. Trevor Cahill (3-9) took the loss, and the Nationals went up 6-0 and never looked back.
Adam LaRoche hit a three-run home run for Washington, and Martin Prado homered for Arizona.
Philadelphia 6, San Diego 2
Domonic Brown hit a home run, his 20th, and had four RBIs as the Phillies beat the Padres Tuesday night, 6-2. Kyle Kendrick (7-4) went eight innings to get the win, allowing two runs, while Jason Marquis (9-3) lost for the first time in his last 11 starts.
The Padres took a 2-0 lead before the Phillies scored three in the 3rd and three in the sixth to break the game open. Marquis went only 4 1/3 innings, giving up all six Phillies runs.
Chicago White Sox 5, New York Mets 4
A tight game that featured some 9th inning fireworks wound up as a White Sox win over the Mets last night, 5-4. The New York Mets tied the White Sox in the top of the 9th on an error by second baseman Gordon Beckham, negating a beautiful outing by White Sox starter Chris Sale, who struck out 13 in eight innings. The White Sox then won the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Alexi Ramirez.
Andrew Brown gave the Mets the lead in the fifth with a homer, but the White Sox got the lead right back with two in the bottom of the inning, setting up the ninth inning drama.
Miami 4, Minnesota 2
The Marlins dealt the Twins a blow to their wild card hopes, bearing them in Miami 4-2. Derek Dietrich homered in the 7th in support of AJ Ramos (2-2), who pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Kevin Correia (6-5) held the Marlins scoreless until the sixth, and took the loss after giving up two in that inning.
The Marlins have won four of five.
