Tiger Woods will be paired with Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds of next weeks U.S. Open at Merion in Pennsylvania.
There will be story lines galore and the sports world will buzz. Woods, the world’s top-ranked golfer, will try to win his first major almost five years after he won his last in one of the most gritty performances in sports when he won at Torrey Pines on a broken leg after dramatically sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole on Sunday to get into a Monday playoff with Rocco Mediate.
Woods’s caddy at that time was Steve Williams, who is now on Adam Scott’s bag after Woods’s got rid of him after Woods’s personal life fell apart after he won his 14th major. Scott, the reigning Masters champion, uses an anchored putting stroke, which Woods said he wants banned as soon as possible. The USGA and the R&A approved the ban on the stroke that will go into effect in 2016.
According to CBS Sports, this is also the first time Woods and McIlroy have been paired together at any major.
In quite the understatement, McIlroy tweeted this after finding out about the pairing on Friday:
