Ever since the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans and Charlotte added the Bobcats, the city has had a terrible basketball product. The record of the new franchise has been abysmal, and now they look to shed the Bobcats moniker and become the Hornets once more.
The nickname became available when the New Orleans team abandoned the moniker to adopt a more city-appropriate Pelicans mascot.
With the option to return to becoming the Hornets, it will likely take 18 months for any switch to take place. The return to the nickname would be a reversion to the state of the franchise from its inception in 1988-2002. That franchise featured players like Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Eddie Jones, Vlade Divac, and Muggsy Bogues. It was also the team that originally drafted Kobe Bryant.
