Jason Collins will appear with First Lady Michelle Obama at a May 29 fundraiser in New York for the Democratic National Committee.
According to Politico, the DNC’s LGBT gala on that night will be Michelle Obama’s first fundraiser since President Barack Obama won re-election.
Collins came out in a Sports Illustrated article on Monday, and Barack Obama called Collins while Michelle Obama tweeted her support.
At a press conference the day after Collins came out, President Obama came back to the podium after concluding the presser to answer a question shouted at him about Collins. He gushed about Collins’s announcement and said he was “very proud” of him.
Democrats are wasting no time taking advantage of Collins’s newfound celebrity while Collins, the NBA journeyman whom some Democrats have already urged to think about going into politics after his career, also seems intent on using his newfound place in the limelight to develop more political connections.
Collins, the Stanford alum who is already politically connected because of friendships with people like Chelsea Clinton from college, will also appear on Oprah’s show on Sunday.
