Winning for only the third time this year, the Miami Marlins took advantage of a key error in the 4th inning to crush the Washington Nationals 8-2 on Tuesday night.
The Marlins came into the game last in the Major Leagues in hitting, at just over .200, and second to last in bullpen ERA at around 5.50.
Dan Haren (1-2) went only 4 1/3 innings for the Nationals, giving up 7 runs (3 earned), including a massive home run to Adeiny Hechavarria, the light-hitting shortstop, following an error by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, his fourth in five games.
The Marlins broke the game open the following inning, loading the bases with one out against Haren before Greg Dobbs worked a walk and knocked Haren out.
Washington scored twice in the sixth on doubles by Adam LaRoche, Tyler Moore and Steve Lombardozzi.
The Nationals defense has been abysmal, committing the most errors in baseball–13.
Miami’s Alex Sanabia (2-1) allowed two runs in six innings, and two relievers completed an eight-hitter.
The Nationals were without Denard Span, Bryce Harper, who was out with the Flu, and Danny Espinosa, who was injured on his hand fouling off a pitch against the Braves.
The Nationals have given up nearly half their season’s total of runs in three games: a 15-0 loss to the Reds, a 9-0 loss to the Braves and the 8-2 loss to the Marlins.
