Jeff Garcia is being paid to help Mark Sanchez be a successful quarterback. Whether by coincidence or not, he has publicly called for the New York Jets to get rid of his backup from last season, Tim Tebow.
The former Heisman Trophy winner was brought in to backup Sanchez and also fill a unique role in the offense. He was neither the #2 option nor did the “Tebow package” ever materialize.
Garcia, however, feels that the distraction of the former Gator may have hindered the development of Sanchez. The former Pro Bowler argued that David Garrard, who has not taken an NFL snap in two seasons, and former seventh round pick, Greg McElroy, are the only legitimate competition for the former USC star.
Sanchez has been much maligned in New York, and the most memorable play of his career is now the infamous “butt fumble.” The Jets could consider drafting Geno Smith at #9 or at #13 if they acquire that pick from the Tampa Bay Bucs in exchange for cornerback Darrelle Revis.
